I am a DONA trained Birth Doula and a Birthing From Within Mentor.
My interest with birth began when I got pregnant with my second child. I knew that it could be different, somehow more than what I had experienced with my first. I immersed myself in books and stories about labour and birth. After her birth I knew that I wanted to be a part of educating and supporting other women to find and get in touch with this new primal part of myself that I didn’t know even existed. I was empowered and wanted everyone to feel this way.
My third child’s birth took me to a new place of understanding. It changed my views around birth and made me check my ego. One thing didn’t change. I knew that it was important for women to feel supported, safe and informed so that they can make the best choices for themselves and their baby while they labour. It was after this that I became a certified DONA Birth Doula and began to serve women in our community. I took the Dancing For Birth™ training in Calgary a year later and have enjoyed dancing with women and watching them gain confidence in their bodies natural ability to birth.
After attending only a few births I saw a trend; birthing people and their partners who felt supported, heard and informed had fewer traumas after the birth. Then I read Birthing From Within by Pam England and it all started to make sense to me. I did the training in Vancouver to become a Birthing From Within Mentor and have never been so excited about this new way to look at birth and life.
Birth is a sacred rite of passage for all people whether it’s their first baby or fifth. When we enter our births from a place of mindfulness, love and with intention it will prevent trauma whether we have a homebirth, a hospital birth with interventions or a cesarean birth. We are not only birthing our babies but also we are becoming mothers and fathers. This is the journey that I love to celebrate and am honored each time I am a part of it.
